I've been developing graphics engines and creating digital media for years, but I have a problem. I can't seem to convince people to want to help. I have a real passion for this sort of thing, something that doesn't go away, yet I am unable to convince people that It would be a fruitful endeavor to develop and publish a game. I do almost all the work, while friends and family pat me on the back for my accomplishments, but also feed off of the success. If the progress slows they don't offer to help or even seem to care, only if there's money comming in. I understand thier perspective, but I can't understand thier lack of creative endeavor and their inability to actually help me accomplish my dream. Does anyone have any advice, or maybe can point me in the right direction to find some sort of real support for these matters?
I could speculate that your friends and family are unqualified or simply don't care about video games, to which it would not make much sense to force them into the industry. They might also be reluctant to give up their current employment for something they may feel doesn't amount to much. If you have no choice but to solo it, then your best bet is to complete as much of your game as you can and outsource the rest. There's not a whole lot of people out there willing to take risks in their lives, so much of this is on you. You would be surprised how many companies survive off one or maybe just a handful of people, especially start-ups.
You have to find people of like passion and that's probably not going to happen with friends and family. You can meet some people entering game contests or on forums. If you chat with someone that's avid about gaming on a forum or whatever, send them a pm and see if they would want to work on a joint project. The worst they can do is say no. Or, put up a personal ad showing what you've done so far and what you plan to do and what type of help you need. In the end, you will probably do most of the work yourself no matter what, but some people may help with music, or models, etc. Small indie games really tend to be one man projects. It makes it a lot simpler if you do make any money if you don't have to split it up 10 ways.
Thanks for the advice, and what you're saying is perfectly accurate. I've had no luck with family and friends, they don't show even the slightest interest, but I've found a number of people online in either gaming communities or forums that seem interested, but I can't seem to get them together and keep them committed. I knew some people back years ago that would help, but through those turbulent years we got seperated and I'm having a hard time tracking them down.
I'm sure that I can find someone, I just need to be heard, because doing this all alone can be very draining for your morale, and It would really help to have someone as interested in this as I am.
