As the subject line states, I'm looking for tips to good (I assume online) resources/repositories for meshes/models and basic animation sets. I assume they would be editable.
Thanks for any tips...

Google 3d warehouse is probably the biggest. If you look at the upload disclaimer, they pretty much give away all rights when they upload. I could be wrong about that, though. Some of the models are high poly, and some don't export well. There's also Blend Swap, but you'll need Blender, a free modeler, to save in another format. There are reasonably priced models advertised in the personal announcement section of this forum, and some commercial repositories like TurboSquid. The company that often advertises here, Arteria3d, are all game models, so would need no changes.

Arteria sells game-ready textured 3D models fairly cheaply. Archive3D has a lot of free models, many of which are textured. For characters, there's Arteria and also MakeHuman, a free tool for generating nude human meshes. There is a motion capture human animation database at CMU.

Check out Daz3D. They offer some free models (dragons, humans, animals), but you can't redistribute their works. It's great if you want to perform some tests or build sprites for a 2D game. Their models are fully rigged and textured. They often come with default poses and animations, so you may be able to get away without doing any real work. While I'm not fond of their Daz Studio, their pose and animation system is fairly easy to use.
FYI the animation database at CMU is also a great resource, but does require some cleanup work. Their BVH files are huge and should be downsized. They also don't cover animations for hands/fingers and feet very well. It can look a bit odd without some additional work.

Hey, sorry I'm late in replying here. Been on and off here. I wanted to say thanks for the great tips above...definitely more than I had bargained for! Thanks so much all!
