Ahh, poor-quality high school programming classes - a common problem! Fortunately, programming is something you can do completely on your own, as you don't need any equipment other than a computer, and all the software / information you need can be had for free on the internet.
For people just starting out I usually recommend learning Python. It's a particularly simple and easy-to-learn language, but is also a real programming language that many professionals use in their daily work, so it is absolutely worth learning. A good resource for learning it is this free online book. The key to getting the most out of books like this is to make sure you do the exercises. Learning programming requires practice to get your brain to absorb all the information and make connections; it's not enough to just read the book. Good luck!
