every time i go to install directx 8 or 9 on my comp it gets about ten percent through and windows says that extraction has failed and it could be the cause of memory or a corrupted cabinet file. its not memory....and im frustrated....someone HELP MEEEEEE!

Ehm...that would give you the idea that installing DX is not a good option...
Ok serious, if you can't install the SDK from the installer simply get a zipped version. There's not difference really except that the installer fills the registry with junk...

DX 9 on Windows 98? Hmm, that sounds risky...
Are you using the net installer or a redistributable?

there's something wrong with the installer me thinks. I had the same problem when i downloaded the dx9 sdk. Exact same message. I deleted the intaller and downlaoded it again and it worked fine.
