During the last months, I have worked on a new 3d jigsaw puzzle game named "Gaia 3D Puzzle". The goal was to produce a jigsaw puzzle game with the same realism as a real jigsaw puzzle.
All the puzzle pieces are in 3D. Like real puzzle pieces, you can see the cardboard on the sides and the pieces are rounded on the edges because of the cut. This kind of model requires thousand of polygons. The game also allows the players to change the piece definition to get a better frame rate on older computers.
The biggest advantage is the 3D aspect. Because the puzzle is modeled in a 3D environment, that means that any puzzle pieces can be moved outside of the screen viewport. You can zoom in/out. Zooming will change the number of pieces available on the screen and how big the pieces appear.
You can also stack the pieces like a real jigsaw puzzle, however there is a limit of 8 pieces in height.
The game uses DirectX 9.0c for the graphics/sound and runs on Windows 2000/XP/Vista. It is also programmed in C++.
