I'm actually concerned about this, but then again we have games in the Apple Store that would not fit this black look of the future of Win8 and Apple is about as closed and overbearing as you can safely get without shooting yourself in the foot..
Yes, but Microsoft isn't Apple. This is just another shot in the foot for Microsoft, whereas, Apple was able to pull it off. We can't have two Apples. That's not going to happen. The only thing that will happen is Microsoft will lose market share to Linux and other more open systems. Add this to the Windows UI and you've got major problems for Microsoft in the near future. Balmer is a one man demolition army.
The standard desktop will still have all the bells and whistles you expect. Metro is just Microsoft's way of controlling the mobile market like Apple. As someone in the comments pointed out, there's two types of developers. The rich and famous, and then everybody else. I've seen it happen on Windows Phone 7 and I'm fully expecting it to happen with Windows 8 Metro. A company like Bethesda only has to make a single phone call and MS would send support staff right to their door, free of charge with complementary advertising space in the win app store. The only reason Bethesda wouldn't take up this offer is because they would have to downgrade Skyrim to run on Metro level hardware.
As far as mobile devices go, IMO MS does a good job. I don't like being treated like a prisoner, but that's honestly not going to change unless developers stand up against it. Apple is more successful today then ever before with no sign that developers are refuting Apple's bad practices. There's the occasional rant, but then there's that tasty honey pot we just can't seem to ignore. Microsoft is just adhering to their shareholders jealousy over Apple's crazy success. Whether or not that works for them is yet to be seen.
