Hi guys... I will soon complete my bachelor's degree and I am applying for Master of Interactive Technology Degree in Guildhall at SMU. Since I'm from India, the admission requirements for international students have the following as one of their requirements,
An essay describing the applicant's motivation, interests and life experiences as they relate to an interest in pursuing a professional career in digital game development. Applicants to the production specialization should also address the motivation behind their interest in pursuing a career as a game producer and how the applicant would impact the industry as a producer.
Here, producer refers to the applicant in the areas of specialization: Art Creation, Level Design, Production, Software Development. I am choosing Software Development as my specialization. The problem is, I have no clue on what to write on the essay. Basically, I didn't understand clearly as to what the paragraph above completely meant. If anyone could lend a hand on this, duly appreciated. I am very proficient in English, so not a problem on writing skills. Just have a problem with the content. Thank you.

Basically, you do not want to write only your knowledge and what you are capable of just to get the job, this is not a résumé. What you need to write is what you think the industry need from which this is what you believe and want to pursue and in turn will impact this industry, and if your believes are correct, the impact will be positive and so will your career.
More like an astronomer who believe there are aliens on the dark side of the moon and devote his life to prove it. When he proves it, the impact on humans would be astronomical.
I can only hope I'm correct and this will help you.

So, basically, I have to write my aims and goals and how that will impact or affect the industry positively. Thanks for clarifying that. Can anything else be derived from their statement above? Duly appreciated.

To me it sounds like you need to write what you have been doing in the past regarding software development (have some hobby projects? Participated in some game industry events? Relevant internships?) and why you are interested in pursuing a career as a software developer in the game industry? Do you have a specific field of interest (physics, graphics, gameplay/AI, etc)? What are you exited about in software engineering? What your vision is for the future development in the software development area you are planning to pursue? I think you need to convince them this is something you truly want and have somewhat realistic expectations instead of being merely a dreamer who hasn't bothered to do anything to reach those dreams.

Ohhh... I see! If that's what it means, then I can write loads of stuff on that. Thanks for the clarity. I can now write a lot on it and build up on that. Thanks for helping me understand, Alienizer and JarkkoL.
