What's up with the numerous bots recently popping on the site?

It's definitely a problem. We have some type of spam-filtering on the site, but it doesn't seem to be very effective for whatever reason. I've suggested automatically holding posts for moderation if they're from a new user and have more than two links, but so far Dia hasn't had time to implement that. In the meantime, if you see spam, please do click the report button in the lower-right corner of the post. That sends an email to all the mods, which may get one of us here quicker to delete it.

this seems to be a problem everywhere. a way around current validation seems to have been found. more than just a few sites are having security problems

Some time ago we were working on validation on one czech programming forums that required solving some kind of equation to let new user join & post (e.g. something like mathemathical captcha). It's though not running anymore (we made the forums private).
Of course for the user it's not a problem to solve (or put that to wolframalpha). But that's something that a bot won't do.
Maybe a good idea to implement ... of course ideas are one thing, finding time and implementing another (where I sadly can't help till late June)
